Why Give? Because Connections Can’t Wait.
When Gayle retired, life did not get smaller. Thanks to Saskatoon Council on Aging Seniors Neighbourhood Hub Clubs, it’s gotten bigger.
When Gayle accepted a friend's invitation to the Seniors Neighbourhood Hub Club two years ago, she found connection that made retirement truly fulfilling. A core program of the Saskatoon Council on Aging (SCOA), the free monthly events offer presentations, light exercise, and entertainment—but for Gayle, the best part is the fellowship.
“I’ve met lots of people there. It's nice to see everybody and have a visit," she explains. The casual conversations have blossomed into genuine friendships, and now she is part of a regular lunch group.
As a self-described "people person," Gayle realized what many retirees discover: losing workplace social connections can leave a void. Now, she marks every Hub Club event on her calendar, declaring, "I have places to go. I have people to see."
Gayle is aware that for many, the clubs are a crucial lifeline. "Some people are very lonesome. It's not healthy to be sitting by yourself in your house all the time. It's healthier to be with people." The Hub Clubs offer the total package of mental, physical, and social wellness and ensure older adults have vital social connections. Gayle's experience shows that the program isn’t just about meeting basic needs, but "creating something better together." For Gayle, the Hub Club isn't just a program she attends. It's part of her life—a source of friendship, discovery, and joy that makes retirement not just comfortable, but truly fulfilling.
