Meet Saskatoon Council on Aging 35th Anniversary Ambassador - Dr. Murray Scharf

Dr. Murray Scharf’s volunteerism is deeply rooted in his commitment to addressing and alleviating the challenges faced by older adults. A dedicated SCOA volunteer since 2006, he served in numerous capacities, including Corporate Secretary, Chair of the Finance and Fundraising Committee, and member of the Advocacy Committee, Long Range Planning Committee, and Older Adult Abuse Task Force, Co-Chair of the Age-friendly Community Development Committee. His roles reflect his dedication to ensuring that older adults’ voices are heard and their needs met.

One of Dr. Scharf’s notable achievements is his work on property tax relief for older adults. Recognizing that rising property taxes were forcing many older adults to move from their long-time homes, he conducted exhaustive research revealing that Saskatchewan lacked property tax relief programs for seniors, unlike other Canadian jurisdictions. His findings led to the drafting of comprehensive recommendations, including tax deferrals, which he presented to Saskatoon's city council. Through his advocacy efforts the City of Saskatoon adopted the Low-Income Seniors Property Tax Deferral Bylaw benefiting many older adults and allowing them to remain in their homes.

Special Projects and Initiatives

Dr. Scharf's influence extends to various special projects that have had lasting impacts on the community. During his time as co-chair of the Age-friendly Saskatoon Steering Committee he coordinated initiatives like the Men’s Survival Cooking Project and the Intergenerational Project with Holy Cross School. These projects promote intergenerational learning and practical life skills, fostering community bonds and empowering seniors to live independently.

He envisions developing partnerships for SCOA to form a group of like-minded individuals and organizations to create an inclusive cultural work plan to prepare for the future needs of seniors up to the year 2050. His forward-thinking approach would ensures that the needs of older adults will continue to be addressed well into the future.

Community Benefits and Impact

Dr. Scharf's contributions to the Saskatoon community and the wider province of Saskatchewan are extensive and multifaceted. His involvement with organizations such as Jubilee Residences, Rotary and Canadian Clubs, Corps of Commissionaires, and the Military Institute of Saskatoon highlights his broad impact. During his time as Jubilee Residences Board member, he chaired the Capital and Buildings Committee, contributing to the development and maintenance of essential facilities for older adults.

His work with the City of Saskatoon’s Board of Revision (Tax Appeals) including serving as Panel Chair, underscores his dedication to fair and equitable treatment for all citizens. Additionally, his role in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Planning and Logistics Committee demonstrates his commitment to broader social justice and community healing efforts.

A former Dean of Education at the University of Saskatchewan, Dr. Scharf's leadership and motivational skills are widely recognized. His ability to inspire others is evident in his positive attitude, strong work ethic, and unwavering determination.
